Accidental Poisoning

The group most at risk from dying from accidental poisoning is 30-34 year old and 45-49. These age groups accounted for 7 of the 8 deaths (2005), two of which were due to exposure to narcotics.
There were 614 young people (0-16 year olds) admitted to Accident & Emergency between 1999-2004.

National statistics identifies poisoning as the cause in 4% of the deaths of young people aged 0-19 during 2005.

Overall accidents to adults and children costs the National Health Service 146 million a year as a result of admissions to Accident & Emergency Units.
