National research identifies transport accidents accounting for 52% of the causes of young people deaths.
Whilst the level in Gloucestershire remains low the overall number of deaths and injuries is significant – 2323 road traffic casualties in the County during 2006.
The major class of road user at risk is the car driver (1180) although 71 young people were injured by vehicles as pedestrians.
Out of the top 7 wards ranked in terms vulnerable children (6 being within Gloucester) there were 93 children admitted into hospital (total 3502) after an accident (1999-2003) with 19 children (total 1096) involved in road traffic accidents (2000-2002).
